"I am not the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union. I cannot comment on the statements of politicians in Ukraine or Azerbaijan.Both Azerbaijan and Armenia are sovereign states. I cannot comment on this or that statement on behalf of the Russian Foreign Ministry," The spokesperson of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Maria Zakharova stated at a briefing today while answering the question of Armenian journalist regarding the statement made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the meeting of Valdai International Discussion Club.

Mrs Zakharova said that Yerevan and Baku have issued numerous statements regarding the settlement of the Nagorno Garabagh conflict.

"These statements have various levels of emotionality, historic and modern content. We are currently working with documents on the table agreed upon by the conflict sides. Our role as mediator is to accelerate the resolution and achievement of this matter as much as possible. We from our sides call on the conflict sides to demonstrate a constructive approach at all times. Russia plays its role in the resolution of the conflict. We call on the sides to take constructive steps in this direction. I reiterate that we have agreed documents and an agenda to go forward” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

She noted that Russia's position on the settlement of the Nagorno Garabagh conflict is clear and this position remains unchanged: "As for the final status of Nagorno Garabagh, the relevant statements made by Russia so far are actual. The status of Nagorno Garabagh must be determined through negotiations within the Minsk Group process."
