The Penitentiary Service has commented on the information regarding the hunger strike of journalist Afghan Muxtarli in the penitentiary, head of the Department of Public Relations of the Penitentiary Service Mehman Sadigov told APA.

Head of the Department of Public Relations of the Penitentiary Service Mehman Sadigov told APA that Afgan Mukhtarli gave official information to the management of the Prison No. 16 due to starting hunger strike: “ He has started to hunger strike since today. Afgan Mukhtarli has been isolated from other prisoners. Currently, he does not have any health problem. He is under the control of a doctor.”

Aflatun Amashev, chairman of the Press Council of Azerbaijan, also expressed his attitude to this event. On Facebook page, he wrote that he had discussed this issue with the leadership of the Prison Service: “Today, a group of journalists came to the Press Council of Azerbaijan and stated that pressure was exerted in Correctional Facility No. 16, where journalist Afgan Mukhtarly is serving his sentence. on his lawyer. They regarded this as an attempt to interfere with the protection of a journalist. We, the Press Council of Azerbaijan, contacted the leadership of the Prison Service of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan and discussed the issue with them. This issue is the focus of the Prison Service. An investigation is underway, it will establish the truth. If such an event has occurred, appropriate measures will be taken.”

Recall that Afgan Mukhtarly was arrested in 2017 on charges of smuggling, illegal border crossing and the use of force against a government official.

By the decision of the Balaken district court, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison.
