Demining operations launched after an explosion that occurred at a weapons and ammo storage of an Azerbaijani Defense Ministry military unit in Khizi district on Aug. 27 are planned to be completed by the end of 2017, Idris Ismayilov, an operations specialist at the Azerbaijani National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), told APA.

Six people were injured as a result of the explosion at a weapons and ammo storage in Khizi on August 27. Law enforcement authorities are investigating the causes of the accident.

Ismayilov informed that 12,636 units of unexploded ordnance (UXO) were detected and defused as a result of operations conducted in 4,717 hectares of area within 45 working days.

“About 50 percent of territory – coastal areas and territory from the military unit to the sea – are currently cleared of UXO. Ammo fell into 12 houses, in particular, courtyards and sowing plots of 46 houses. Overall, 58 houses have been inspected. The detected UXO units were removed,” the ANAMA specialist said.

He went on to say that ANAMA carried out a campaign in schools and hospitals in villages of Khizi to raise awareness among the local population.
