Azerbaijan-Russia cross-border op: 27 wanted criminals detained

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov – APA. The cross-border operation, called “Border-Shield”, was conducted along the Azerbaijani-Russian state border on 21-27 November 2016, Azerbaijan’s Interior Ministry said in a statement on November 30.

The operation was held in line with the joint agreement between the interior ministries of the two countries.

The main objective of the operation was to take organizational and practical measures in order to implement the decisions taken on the cross-border cooperation, to detect and disarm members of transnational organized criminal gangs and terrorist organizations, as well as to reveal the channels of importing financial and material means for carrying out other illegal actions.

As a result of the operation carried out in Guba, Gusar, Khachmaz, Balaken, Zagatala, Gakh, Shaki, Oghuz and Gabala districts, some 27 persons wanted for various crimes were detained, said the statement.

In addition, 18 persons declared wanted by the Russian side were detained and the whereabouts of 5 missing persons were detained. Illegally stored 5 submachine guns, 8 pistols, 67 rifles and smooth-bore guns, 30 hand grenades, 38 weapon magazines, 30 various pieces of military equipment, one shell and 8,611 cartridges of various calibers were seized.

During the operation, law-enforcement forces prevented five cases of illegal drug trafficking, seizing over one kilogram of drugs.

Three crimes in Guba, 2 in Gusar, and one in each of Shaki, Khachmaz and Gakh districts over illegal possession of firearms, theft and fraud were solved.

The interior ministries of Azerbaijan and Russia are planning to carry out such operations in the future.
