Azerbaijan: Russian citizens rescued after being trapped in Shamakhi mountains identified

Foreigners trapped in a mountainous area on Azerbaijan’s Shamakhi district have been rescued, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, on October 3, the Emergency Situations Ministry’s Crisis Management Center received information from the State Marine Administration about two Russian citizens who got trapped in a car in a mountainous area near Pirbayli village the country’s Shamakhi district.

The Crisis Management Center immediately examined the operational situation as well as the flexible management of operational data and rescue forces was carried out. Forces and equipment of the Civil Defense Troops and a helicopter of the Aviation Division were involved in the search for tourists, said the statement.

As a result of the search and rescue operation, tourists were located, a Nissan, in which they were trapped, was towed and was delivered to the city of Shamakhi.

In addition, three local residents, who were trapped in a UAZ car in the same area, were also provided with appropriate assistance. The operation ended on October 3 at 19:10pm.

The Russian tourists, who were trapped in a Nissan in a mountainous area near Pirbahli village in Shamakhi district on Tuesday morning as the road fell into disrepair due to the rainy weather, were identified as Yuriy Sivarnik and Olga Juravlyova, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
