The Main Anti-Corruption Department under the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General has opened a criminal case due to the collapse of a bridge over the Goychay River, APA has learned.

Two persons—Nazim Gasimov and Najmaddin Aliyev—face charges under articles 308.2 (abuse of official powers), 192.21 (illegal business with extraction of income in the large size) and 255 (infringement of rules of protection and use of bowels) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

The reason for the initiation of the criminal case is that despite the abrogation of the Goychay district executive authority’s orders on allocation of land for individuals and legal entities working in the sand and gravel deposit as well as other land leasing contracts, there is evidence that they secretly collected material from the river bed and thus causing damage to the foundation of a bridge situated at 217th km of Baku-Shamakhi-Yevlakh highway and to a main water pipe used to irrigate sown areas north of the river.

It was revealed that previously acting “Real Inshaat” Ltd. has caused damage to nature in the amount of 191,440 manats, “Elnicat” Ltd. in the amount of 356,400 manats, “Azpod” Ltd. in the amount of 950,400 manats, “Attinak” Ltd. in the amount of 1,372,800 manats, “ATF” Ltd. in the amount of 316,800 manats, Goychay branch of Azeragrartikinti OJSC in the amount of 495,000 manats, “Bayburt Group” Anonym company in the amount of 314,160 manats, Shahid Ismayilov in the amount of 184,800 manats and Tahir Aliyev in the amount of 110,880 manats for sand and gravel mix by illegally exploiting the Goychay sand and gravel deposit during the exploitation period.

A powerful mudflow destroyed a 40-meter bridge over the Goychay River on the Baku-Shamakhi-Yevlakh highway on June 2.
