Court to consider IBA ex-chairman’s appeal next month

Baku. Shahriyar Alizade – APA. Baku Court of Appeal will hold a preliminary hearing on the appeal of the former chairman of the board of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA), Jahangir Hajiyev, and other people arrested alongside him on December 9.

The hearing will be presided over by judge Aflatun Gasimov.

The former chairman of the board of International Bank of Azerbaijan Jahangir Hajiyev, the former heads of the bank’s Central branch Anar Sultanov and Ilgar Abdullayev, the former director of Inter Security LLC Ibrahim Huseynov, the former head of the bank’s Central branch Yusif Alakbarov, the former head of the bank’s Transport Branch Kanan Orujov, the former head of the bank’s Narimanov Branch Mammad Jahangirov and the former director of the Baku hazelnut factory Azad Javadov, who are involved in the case, were arrested on charges under articles 179.3.1, 179.3.2 (embezzlement on a large scale by an organized group), 308.2 (abuse of power, resulting in grave consequences), 309.2 (abuse of power, resulting in grave crimes), 313 (official forgery), 228.1 and 228.4 (illegal storage and carrying of firearms).

On 14 October 2016, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced Jahangir Hajiyev to 15 years in prison.

Under the court’s sentence, Hajiyev will have to pay 63 million manats in favor of the IBA and 7 million manats in favor of Aqrokredit CJSC.

Other participants of the process: Anar Sultanov has been sentenced to 7.5 years conditionally with 3 years of probation, Ilgar Abdullayev – to 6.5 years conditionally with 3 years of probation, Mammad Jahangirov – to 7.5 years conditionally with 3 years of probation, Kanan Orujov – to 7 years 23 days conditionally with 3 years of probation, Ibrahim Huseynov – to 8 years, Yusif Alakparov – to 8.5 years, Azad Javadov – to 10 years 11 months in prison.

Jahangir Hajiyev and the other accused have filed an appeal against the court’s sentence.
