Investigation into criminal case of ‘Akula Akif’ suspended

The investigation into the criminal case of Akif Mustafayev, known by the nickname “Akula (shark) Akif”, has been suspended as he was declared wanted over the criminal case filed against former employees of the liquidated National Security Ministry of Azerbaijan, APA has learned.

The investigation will be resumed after his detention.

Earlier, there were reports that Akif Mustafayev was detained in the Spanish town of Lloret de Mar.

Attorney Abbas Atakishiyev confirmed the detention of his defendant Mustafayev. “Akif Mustafayev was detained in Lloret de Mar, but later released,” said the attorney.

Nineteen persons were sentenced to pretrial detention over the criminal case initiated against former employees of the liquidated National Security Ministry, informed the General Prosecutor’s Office.

Akif Mustafayev was arrested in absentia and declared wanted as he avoided the investigation. Another person, Natavan Murvatova, was placed under house arrest.

The criminal case filed against the ministry’s ex-employees – Akif Chovdarov, Salim Mammadov and Orkhan Osmaniv – was handed over to the Baku Military Court.

The trial in the case of another ten employees has been completed. Attorneys are currently reviewing the case materials. The investigation is underway into the case of the other accused persons.

Some 57 people, whose rights were violated as a result of the criminal acts committed by several employees of the liquidated National Security Ministry, were recognized as victims. The total damage caused to them accounts for tens of millions of manats.

The detainees are accused of abusing their official powers, using technical devices for obtaining confidential data, illegally tracking phone conversations of various entrepreneurs, carrying out illegal search operations against them, seizing a great deal property from entrepreneurs, threatening with use of firearms and other items against them, capturing entrepreneurs and bringing them to the ministry’s administrative building and keeping them out of touch with their families in an illegal way.
