Recent prisoner escape discussed at Azerbaijani Justice Ministry’s collegium meeting

The recent incident of prisoner escape was discussed at the collegium meeting of Azerbaijan’s Justice Ministry on Wednesday.

The information about the escape of two prisoners on October 23 was heard and the results of the initial inspection of the rare incident were discussed, the Justice Ministry’s press service told APA.

The press service noted that 21 employees of the Penitentiary Service were brought to disciplinary responsibility and 15 people were removed from justice authorities. For more people, including B. Abdullayev, the former commander of a convoy battalion, were arrested on charges of abuse of official power. Moreover, one of the escapees was captured, while the other one is still being searched for.

Furthermore, concrete instructions were given as to strengthening discipline within the Penitentiary Service, compliance with the law, strengthening security, stiffening control over subordinate structures, and increasing responsibility of the staff.

The two convicts – Etibar Mammadov and Ali Aghami, charged with numerous articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, managed to escape while being transferred to Baku on a special purpose train running from Astara to Baku on October 23.

Ali Aghami was captured a few days later in the city of Shirvan, while Etibar Mammadov is still on the run.
