More than a thousand Azerbaijani citizens have went to the conflict zone in Syria, Suad Mahmudov, an official of Azerbaijan’s State Security Service said on Tuesday, APA reports.

Mahmudov said that while the number of Azerbaijani citizens joining terrorist groups in the North Caucasus was measured in tens, those who went to Afghanistan and Pakistan number around 300.

The number of Azerbaijani citizens who went to Syria is well over 1,000, Mahmudov noted.

"What has this resulted from? Of course, from extremist propaganda in the media, on internet sites and social networks. How come so many people joined the Syrian war? Because these events were well propagated and a great deal of funds were allocated. Of course, all these processes are seriously controlled by the State Security Service that is taking measures to prevent them. As a result, religious radicalism in Azerbaijan is being eradicated,” he added.
