The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office has initiated a criminal case in connection with the abduction and hostage-taking of Azerbaijanis in the country, Akif Gulmammadov, chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Congress of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis, told APA on Thursday.

“A manhunt has already been launched for criminals, but the details are not disclosed,” he said.

Gulmammadov noted that the criminal case was opened under articles of kidnapping and robbery of the Ukrainian Criminal Code.

“We are regularly informed about the course of the investigation,” he added.

Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Ukraine was unavailable for comment.

Numerous cases of abduction of Azerbaijani businessmen and their children for ransom have been reported in Ukraine over the past two years. After Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov sent a letter to his Ukrainian counterpart Yuriy Lutsenko over the recent acts of violence, he met with a group Azerbaijanis living in the country.
