Baku. Hafiz Heydarov – APA. Azerbaijan’s law-enforcement authorities have detained three persons over an attempt to sell high-denomination euro banknotes to individuals in capital Baku, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Nov. 29.

As a result of urgent operation measures, a criminal group – Azerbaijani citizen Kamandar Amirov, Ukrainian citizen Valentine Bilyk and Georgian citizen Taleh Nayibov – was detained while attempting to sell numerous counterfeit banknotes of 500 euro denomination to several people in Baku.

In addition, 9,500 counterfeit euros were seized form them during the search.

The examination revealed that the detected counterfeit banknotes do not differ much from the real ones, and their marks have been forged through a special method.

In their testimonies, the detainees said they were planning to flee Azerbaijan after selling the counterfeit banknotes in shopping centers in different parts of the country.

A criminal case has been filed on the incident.

The Interior Ministry’s Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime continues operational measures to prevent production and release into circulation of counterfeit banknotes, which represent a serious threat to the country's financial system.
