A military court on Tuesday sentenced 70 people to jail terms of varying lengths for violence allegedly committed after Egypt’s bloody 2013 military coup, according to a legal source, APA reports quoting Anadolu agency.

The court sentenced 39 defendants to life in prison for allegedly storming local police stations and churches in Egypt’s central Minya province in mid-2013, defense lawyer Khaled al-Koumi told Anadolu Agency.

According to al-Koumi, 11 other defendants were slapped with 10-year prison terms, 17 with seven-year terms and three with five-year terms.

Twenty-one other defendants in the case were acquitted due to a lack of evidence, the lawyer said.

The court sentences can still be appealed before a military appeals tribunal, according to al-Koumi.
