An Egyptian archeological mission discovered 20 tombs dating back to the 26th Dynasty of ancient Egypt running from 664 to 525 BC, the Egyptian ministry of tourism and antiquities said Monday, APA reports citing Xinhua.

The tombs were unearthed at the site of Tell El Deir (Hill of the Monastery) in the northern city of Damietta, said a ministry statement, adding the find would "rewrite the city's history."

The tombs were divided into limestone structures, usually reserved for the wealthy, and simple ditches used for burying people of low birth, according to the statement.

The Egyptian mission also discovered funerary amulets of different sizes and pots for preserving the guts of the dead during the process of mummification, the ministry noted.
