Five people were killed and another sustained serious injuries in a roadside blast in Kenya's northeastern border region of Garissa on Thursday, a regional official said, APA reports citing Xinhua.

Northeastern regional commissioner James Kianda said a private vehicle with occupants ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) in Garissa County.

Kianda said the incident happened as the vehicle, which was ferrying six persons in total, made its way to Hulugho from Masalani.

"The IED detonated between Bura East and Galmagala areas," the government administrator said on phone.

He said an operation had been launched to apprehend those behind the heinous incident.

Kianda urged residents to cooperate with the security apparatus to improve security.

The incident comes after Garissa leaders urged residents to be more vigilant and report any suspicious persons to the authorities.

The driver of the vehicle that sustained serious damage is fighting for his life in hospital while another passenger escaped with minor injuries.

Witnesses said the deceased persons had been from the same family.

"Five of the occupants succumbed on the spot. One sustained injuries all over the body and broke both hands," said a witness who declined to be identified.
