“Grain production exceeded the expectation last year. As far as we know, farmers can not sell the wheat they produced. Therefore, we raised the issue that the State should buy part of the wheat from farmers. This would encouragement for farmers. In my opinion, wheat should be purchased on market prices. With this, the State will ensure the food stockpile, and will be able to regulate prices in the domestic market if necessary,” he added.
According to him, wheat has been planted in 800 000 hectares and 2.1 million tons of food wheat is expected this year.
In 2008 Azerbaijan harvested a record high of 2 498 300 tons of grain (including corn) from 904 700 hectares, compared to 2.3 million tons in 2007.
The productivity increased by 0.5 metric centner per hectare to 27.7 metric centners.
The State Statistical Committee said wheat accounted for 67.1% or 1 677 500 tons of the grain harvest.
