Brazil's COVID-19 death toll tops 117,000

Brazil registered 1,085 deaths from the COVID-19 in one day, raising the death toll to 117,665, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The total number of people who have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the outbreak here rose to 3,717,156 after tests detected 47,161 new cases in the previous 24 hours.

The southeast state of Sao Paulo has the highest number of deaths in Brazil, 29,194, and of cases, 776,135.

The neighboring Rio de Janeiro State has the second-highest death toll, with 15,700 deaths. The two states are the only ones with more than 10,000 deaths in the country.

Worldwide, Brazil places second in terms of COVID-19 cases and deaths, only after the United States.
