1054 US flights have been cancelled for Monday as the nation prepares for Hurricane Dorian. Nearly half of those flights concerned routes either arriving or departing from Florida airports, APA reports citing Ria Novosti.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport announced on Sunday that it would be closing at noon on Monday "until further notice."

Cancellations also impacted North Carolina, Georgia, Maryland and other states. Approximately 336 flights were canceled for Sunday alone.

Storm Dorian has hit the Bahamas.

It's the most powerful storm the Caribbean islands of the Bahamas has experienced since records began with winds of 180 mph.

It has been given category five status which is the highest ranking for hurricanes, and Dorian has been described as "extremely dangerous" by US President Donald Trump.

According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm is moving westwards and is expected to reach the US east coast.

The government in the Bahamas has opened 14 shelters and named dozens of churches, schools and other buildings on its official lists of emergency shelters.
