Ukraine and the United States will exchange experience in searching prisoners of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) soldiers, APA reportq referring to Unian.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) under the U.S. Department of Defense was officially signed at the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States, the Embassy said on Facebook.
The ceremony was held with the participation of outgoing Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S. Valeriy Chaly and DPAA Director Kelly McKeague.
The memorandum is the result of two years of work of the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States, together with American partners, to prepare the necessary regulatory framework that allows the search in Ukraine and the return to the United States of the remains of American soldiers who died and went missing during World War II.
Now this is the third Memorandum of Understanding concluded between the central executive agencies of Ukraine and the U.S. Department of Defense on this issue. Previous memoranda in this area were concluded by the SBU Security Service of Ukraine and the Ministry of Veterans of Ukraine.
In addition, the Memorandum provides for the exchange of experience with the American side on the specifics of the search for servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other government agencies who were missing or captured during Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine.
According to the Ministry of Defense, 71 Ukrainian soldiers were considered MIA in Donbas as of May 2019.
