Sweden and Finland should hurry up with joining NATO while Moscow is “busy” with conducting a military special operation in Ukraine, said Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, APA reports citing CNBC.

He called the current situation for Helsinki and Stockholm a “window of opportunity”.

According to him, the procedure for the entry of Sweden and Finland into the alliance will stretch for several months, even if the application process is held urgently. The reason for this, he called the need to coordinate applications with the parliaments of 30 NATO member countries. At the same time, back in January, the former secretary general of the alliance stated that Finland and Sweden would have the opportunity to become NATO members the day after the application was submitted.

Earlier, the current head of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said that the organization “would be glad to see Finland and Sweden in its ranks.” US Permanent Representative to NATO Julianne Smith said Washington would welcome these countries to join the alliance.
