Republican leader Kevin McCarthy was once again defeated in the run for the House speaker with the ballot locked in stalemate as representatives of his caucus failed to unanimously agree on who will lead the lower chamber of Congress following the ninth round of voting on Thursday, APA reports citing Teletrader.

The race to become the next speaker of the House at Capitol Hill is still up in the air as it enters its third day, with the election going to a tenth round of voting and becoming the longest speaker race in 164 years. The California Republican was supported by 200 party members, with 17 others giving their vote to Florida Representative Byron Donalds, and 3 ballots going to the representative of Oklahoma, Kevin Hern.

"We're going to be doing this for a long time" GOP Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska, a McCarthy supporter, told CNN, calling those voting in favor of other Republican candidates an "embarrassment" to the country and the party.
