Twitter has started laying off staff a week after Elon Musk took over the microblogging giant, APA reports citing BBC.

“In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” the company said in an internal email to staff, which Tech in Asia reviewed.

Without quoting numbers, Twitter said in the email that the move will “impact a number of individuals.”

According to reports, the company could let go of as many as half it’s employees, which works out to nearly 3,700 staff.

The company will inform employees about their future at the company via emails by 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday.

To protect the safety of Twitter’s systems and customer data, its offices have been temporarily closed, it said.

“If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home,” read the email.
