US President Joe Biden has appointed General Christopher Cavoli to the post of Supreme Commander of the Allied Armed Forces in Europe, said Lloyd Austin, U.S Secretary of Defense, APA reports citing Ria Novosti.

Cavoli will replace US Air Force General Todd Walters, who led NATO forces in Europe for three years. Cavoli is currently in charge of US ground forces in Europe and Africa.

NATO approved Cavoli's candidacy. The alliance said in a statement that it will take over at the change of command ceremony at the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Powers in Mons, Belgium, in the summer. According to The Wall Street Journal, Cavoli previously served as director for Russia at the Joint Staff and holds a master's degree in Russian and East European Studies from Yale University.
