The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (UNHRC) announced on Friday it has decided to create the position of a special rapporteur that would monitor and report on events in Russia about that country's alleged actions against civil society and human rights, APA reports citing the foreign press.

Out of 47 members present at the polling, 17 voted in favor of the decision, six voted against it, and 24 abstained. It is the first time the council has created such a role to observe the situation in one of the UN Security Council's (UNSC) permanent member countries, P5+1.

So far, the UNHRC has appointed special rapporteurs on the situation of human rights in Belarus, Burundi, Cambodia, the Central African Republic, Eritrea, Iran, Mali, Myanmar, North Korea, Palestine, Somalia, and Syria.
