The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has published new inclusion and diversity guidelines for filmmakers to be eligible for the best picture Oscar, APA reports citing ABC.

The rules lay out percentages or numbers of actors and staff on a movie that must be filled by people of colour, women, people with disabilities or people from the LGBTQI community.

The new standards will be implemented from 2024.

The academy said the move represented the next phase of a five-year effort to promote diversity on and off screen.

"We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry," president David Rubin and chief executive Dawn Hudson said in a joint statement.
