The Japanese government declared a state of emergency in 7 additional prefectures on Wednesday, a move proposed by the country's Minister of Economic Revitalization Yasutoshi Nishimura, APA reports citing Teletrader.

Apart from Tokyo, where the state of emergency was initially declared, the new measures will now take effect in Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Gifu, Aichi, Fukuoka, and Tochigi.

The new set of containment measures will remain in place at least until February 7, and entail mostly recommendations, as the imposition of stricter measures would be impossible without a change of the country's laws.
