The Japanese government is still seeking to welcome the Tokyo Olympics safely and continues preparing from the competitions in cooperation with the city administration and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told the national parliament Friday, APA reports citing TASS.

"The Olympic Games should become a symbol of humanity’s victory over the coronavirus. We continue to closely cooperate with the Tokyo administration and the IOC to host safe competitions," he said.

On Thursday, IOC President Thomas Bach said that the Tokyo Olympics can possibly be rescheduled again or cancelled altogether. Bach underscored that safety of participants remains top priority for the organizers. Moreover, the president did not rule out possibility of reducing the number of fans or holding the games without them.
