Several people are feared dead in a bombing on Sunday targeting a popular hotel in Somalia's capital, police said, APA reports quoting Anadolu Agency.

The hotel near Mogadishu's airport is frequented by security officials and opposition politicians.

Abdifatah Hassan, a police official, told Anadolu Agency over the phone that heavily armed gunmen stormed the hotel after the bomb attack.

"We don't know how many people have been killed or wounded in the attack but surely there are casualties," Hassan said.

"This afternoon, terrorists attacked the Afrik Hotel, located near KM4, Aden Adde International Airport Road. Police quickly arrived on the scene. A rescue operation is ongoing," said Somali police in a short statement.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
