Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia ink multiple agreements on wind energy projects

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy and ACWA Power of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have signed a number of documents, including two implementation agreements and a memorandum of understanding on wind energy projects on the sidelines of the 9th Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting and 1st Green Energy Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting held in Baku, APA reports.

The documents include “Implementation Agreement related to an Offshore Wind Power Project with capacity up to 1.5 GW in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the “Implementation Agreement relating to an Onshore Wind Project with capacity of up to 1 GW in the Republic of Azerbaijan”, and the “Memorandum of Understanding in relations to development of a Battery Energy Storage System in the Republic of Azerbaijan”.

Speaking to the meeting, Azerbaijani Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov underlined that from today the partnership with ACWA Power is expanding through projects on wind power plants with a total capacity of 2.5 GW and the creation of battery energy storage systems for the first time in Azerbaijan. Shahbazov also stressed the importance of joint activity with ACWA in terms of reducing carbon emissions and accelerating the energy transition, as well as ensuring new capacities for the planned green energy corridor from the Caspian to Europe.

Chairman of ACWA Power Mohammad Abunayyan hailed relationship with Azerbaijani partners and signing of the new documents, saying “We are excited to expand our role in accelerating the nation`s energy transformation.”

The ACWA Power is also implementing the 240 MW Khizi-Absheron Wind Power Plant construction project.
