The number of newly-registered coronavirus infections in China declined for the third consecutive day, landing at 36,061, according to figures released by the country's health authorities on Thursday, APA reports citing Teletrader.

The People's republic documented 4,150 symptomatic cases and 31,911 symptomatic infections since the previous update.

In what was interpreted as a sign that the authorities may be looking to decrease the intensity of lockdowns, Chinese Vice Premier Sun Chunlan noted on Wednesday that "the country is facing a new situation and new tasks in epidemic prevention and control as the pathogenicity of the Omicron virus weakens, more people are vaccinated and experience in containing the virus is accumulated," according to state-owned media.

She also "urged efforts to further optimize the COVID-19 response, improve diagnosis, testing, treatment and quarantine measures."
