A major earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday, killing 237 people as buildings collapsed across the snowy region, and triggering a search for survivors trapped in rubble, APA reports citing Reuters.

The quake, which hit in the early darkness of a winter morning, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon.

A 7.8 magnitude quake has knocked down multiple buildings in southeast Turkiye and Syria. At least 100 deaths have been reported in Turkey, with others believed to be trapped under rubble. The toll from the incident may rise as many casualties are feared.

At least 50 people have been killed across Syria as buildings collapsed after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that had its epicenter in southeastern Turkiye state media and a local hospital said, APA reprots citing AFP.

Forty-two people were killed in parts of Syria, state media said, while a local hospital told AFP that eight others were killed in northern areas controlled by pro-Turkish factions.

“Forty-two deaths and 200 injuries have been reported in Aleppo, Hama, and Latakia as a result of the earthquake in a preliminary toll,” state news agency SANA said, quoting a health ministry official.
