Israel's Consul General in New York Asaf Zamir resigned on Sunday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over disagreements about judicial reform, APA reports citing Teletrader.
According to Zamir's resignation letter, the decision to fire Gallant was "dangerous." The Israeli diplomat pointed out that the judicial reform "undermines the very foundation of our democratic system and threatens the rule of law in our country."
At the same time, local media reported that thousands of people gathered on streets across Israel to protest Gallant's dismissal. Police used water cannons against demonstrators outside Netanyahu's Jerusalem residence after they reportedly breached barricades.
