Iranian police seized close to 130 kg of opium from four cars on the Qom-Tehran freeway and arrested six drug traffickers, official news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.

In one of the operations, the police discovered the traffickers' intention to transport a 108.3-kilogram opium shipment from a southern province to the Iranian capital and caught them on the road, IRNA quoted Qom province's Police Commander Mahmoud Mir-Feizi as saying, APA reports.

During the operation, the police found 11 packages of opium concealed in the cars, he said, noting that the arrestees have been handed over to judicial authorities.

Meanwhile, Hassan Hashem-Nia, the chief of Qom province's anti-narcotics police, said his forces seized 20.6 kg of opium from two vehicles on the Qom-Tehran freeway in separate operations.

The traffickers, both have been arrested, hid the drugs in the cars, he added, saying they were identified and detained at a gas station.
