Azerbaijan is security outpost in Caspian region: Russian defense minister - <span style="color: red;">UPDATED

Moscow. Farid Akbarov – APA. Russia and Azerbaijan are expanding cooperation in order to strengthen security in the Caspian region, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said in his meeting with Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov, APA’s Moscow correspondent reported.

“We think Azerbaijan is a security outpost in the Caspian region. For this reason, we need to cooperate more effectively in this region,” Shoigu said.

He said the two countries are very close to this.

“I believe this has considerable impact on stability in the region,” said Shoigu.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov, which was took place on the sidelines of the next meeting of the CIS Council of Defense Ministers in Moscow Nov. 30, APA’s Moscow correspondent reported.

The ministers discussed prospects of bilateral military and military-technical cooperation.

Shoigu noted that bilateral relations between the two ministries are going on according to plan.

“In addition to this plan, we have cooperated in the fight against global terrorism. We’re carrying out our military cooperation plans,” said the Russian minister.

Today, Azerbaijan is a security outpost in the Caspian region, Shoigu said, adding. “So we need to cooperate in this area more efficiently. We’re hoping to create a body in 2017 of the two countries’ navy commands that will with security issues in the Caspian Sea.”

In turn, Zakir Hasanov said the bilateral military and military-technical cooperation between the two countries is developing, noting that today’s meeting will be efficient for both sides.

Minister Hasanov also added that more than 80 Azerbaijani citizens study in Russia’s higher military education schools.

At the end of the meeting, the two defense ministers signed the cooperation plan for 2017.
