“Transmission capacity of the Southern Gas Corridor can be extended up to 30 bln. c/m in the second stage. In the first stage 8 bln. c/m gas will enter Italy”, said Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General “Energy” of European Commission Klaus-Dieter Borchardt at the press conference, held on results of the VI Ministerial meeting in the framework of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council in Baku today, APA-Economics reports.
He stated that negotiations on increasing the capacity up to 20 bln. c/m have been currently held and an agreement has been reached: “Exploration works on the perspective fields are conducted in Azerbaijan now. Transferring to natural gas by putting aside coal is considered in some countries.
The Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov noted that in the initial phase, 16 bln. cubic meters of gas will be transported via the Southern Gas Corridor: "6 bln. cubic meters of that gas will be delivered to Turkey, and the remaining part – to Europe. The Southern Gas Corridor may be expanded. As of now, its capacity may be increased to 31 bln. cubic meters, besides the capacity of the TAP pipeline may also be doubled. The Balkan countries are interested in joining this project in the future. Bulgaria will take its place in the ranks of the Azerbaijani gas purchasers in the first phase. Later on other Balkan countries will also have an opportunity to join these ranks. As the President himself also said, there are very promising gas fields in Azerbaijan, and there will also be enough gas for the second phase of the Southern Gas Corridor".
