The decisions of such large energy companies of the USA as Chevron and ExxonMobil to withdraw from the projects in Azerbaijan have been made on the basis of serious business principles, said Matthew Bryza, the USA’s former ambassador to Azerbaijan, the former co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group in his statement to “APA-Economics”.
“During the past several years, these giant companies made their investments mainly in non-traditional oil sector not widely encountered in the USA because they considered this the most correct way of increasing their incomes. Based on my personal experience, I can say both companies by their aforementioned decisions didn’t attach significance to geopolitical interests of the US government, and focused just on their individual goals and targets. As the non-government companies having their own shareholders, such behavior demonstrated by them and the decisions adopted by them are normal.
Taking into consideration that the US government once encouraged them to join Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) main export pipeline project, I especially reproach in this matter the managers of the ExxonMobil Company. They didn’t accept our support proposals and told us repeatedly and angrily not to interfere in their affairs.
I would like to tell people who claim that there is a coldness in the US-Azerbaijan relations bringing this issue forward as an argument, that there is no ground for anxiety in this area. The articles written in this regard don’t correspond with reality, the relations between the two countries are being continued in a positive way”, he noted.
