A group of believers have proposed the abolishment of the post of akhunds in Azerbaijani mosques, but maintenance of imam institution.
The proposal was made at a meeting organized by the Caucasian Muslims Office (CMO) dedicated to the advent of the month of Muharram.
Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations of Azerbaijan Mubariz Gurbanli expressed his support for the proposal.
Gurbanli said that it is time to switch to a common system in mosques.
Sheikh-ul-Islam Haji Allahshukur Pashazade praised the proposal mentioning the possibility of considering it.
