Russia supports reforms in UN Security Council

"Russia supports reforms in the UN Security Council ”, said Deputy FM of Russia Sergei Vershinin, APA reports citing Qazeta.ru.

“Taking into consideration, changes occurred in the world, we support reforms in the UN Security Council. However the reforms should be conducted with consent of all members of the Security Council. It is necessary to maintain activity capacity of the Security Council during changes”, he noted.

The Minister said the issue has been discussed in intergovernmental negotiations in New York for a long time, but there was not an agreement on final decision. He stated conducted negotiations were related to expansion of the Security Council and number of permanent members.

Russian Deputy FM added he welcomed India’s participation in renewed staff of Security Council: “We stress India is a strong candidate Security Council membership every time. New Delhi has an independent course. We believe, India’s membership to the Security Council is a significant contribution to its activity.”

Deputy Minister noted that Moscow considered essential to expand representations of developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America in the Security Council.
