Cocaine. inanciers of the Provincial Command of Reggio Calabria and the Officials of the Customs Office of Gioia Tauro, under the coordination and direction of the Pub Prosecutor of Reggio Calabria - DDA, concluded a complex operation aimed at combating international drug trafficking, subjecting to seizure 2,734 kg of pure cocaine, APA reports citing Albanian Daily News.
The exceptional result achieved is the result of an intelligence activity and constant analysis of the commercial routes that from South America reach the Black Sea, passing through the Calabrian port of call.
The investigators, among the thousands of containers in transit, have identified two coming from Guayaquil (Ecuador) and destined for Armenia, where they should have arrived through the Georgian port of Batumi.
The in-depth studies on the documentation found and the cross-checks, carried out through the databases, on the companies involved in the operation, therefore corroborated the investigative hypotheses and the need to proceed with the inspection of the two refrigerated boxes, over 12 meters long and containing 78 tons of bananas.
The cocaine was identified after long and complex search operations, with the aid of sophisticated scanners supplied to ADM and the canine units of the Guardia di Fnanza and the anti-drug dog Joel.
Overall, the narcotic substance seized by the Fiamme Gialle of Gioia and by the officials of the Anti-Fraud Department of the UD of Gioia Tauro, found to be of extremely pure quality and in perfect condition, could have earned the traffickers an income of over 800 million euros.
Also, in consideration of the large quantity, over 30 specialized soldiers of the Guardia di Finanza were employed for the transport operations and subsequent destruction, who took care of the safety device.
In the days preceding the operation, the complex and articulated risk analysis activities and the factual findings on the thousands of containers coming from the South American continent, had allowed the soldiers of the Guardia di Finanza and the customs officials to identify further loads of cocaine for a total of 600kg. The drug, in these cases, had been cleverly hidden in 6 containers in always different ways: among the goods, in false bottoms or, again, in the external cavities of the boxes.
All the containers carried exotic fruits from Ecuador and, after the transhipment in Gioia Tauro, they should have arrived in various ports, both in Italy and abroad: Croatia, Greece and Georgia again.
The methods of concealment of the drug often prove to be different and always evolving, forcing investigators to perfect the operating methodologies from time to time.
