Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded the former head of the Russian oil and gas company Lukoil Vahit Alekperov with the Order of Merit to the Fatherland, I degree, the corresponding decree was published on the official portal of legal information, APA reports citing RIA Novosti.

"On awarding state awards of the Russian Federation ... with the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 1st degree, Alekperov Vahit Yusufovich," the document says.

The award was conferred for services to the state, a great contribution to the development of the fuel and energy complex and many years of conscientious work.

Vahit Alekperov was born on September 1, 1950 in Baku. In 1974 he graduated from the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry named after M. Azizbayov (now the Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry). From 1990 to 1991, he held the position of Deputy, First Deputy Minister of the Oil and Gas Industry of the USSR.

On April 21, Alekperov informed Lukoil of his decision to relinquish his powers as a member of the board of directors, as well as to prematurely resign as president of the company. Alekperov has headed the company since its foundation in 1993.

As of March 31, 2022, Alekperov owned and disposed of votes in relation to 3.12% of Lukoil shares. He also had a beneficial economic interest (beneficiary) (including through family trusts or mutual funds) in respect of 5.43% of Lukoil shares, for which he does not control voting rights. However, Lukoil's Eurobond prospectus in the fall of 2021 noted that Alekperov's share in the company was 28.33%.
