On Friday, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu said that "the situation in the Western strategic direction is characterized by the growth of military threats near the Russian borders," APA reports citing Tele Trader.

He cited the increased frequency of flights by United States strategic bombers in Europe and the presence of US shops carrying guided missiles in the Baltic Sea near Kaliningrad.

In response, Russia will send 12 "military units and divisions" to its Western Military District by the end of the year, partly responding to Sweden's and Finland's decision to apply for NATO membership. He added the forces would also be supplied with modern weapons and military equipment.
