Work has begun to include the historical center of Shusha in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List

The Ministry of Culture has begun work on the preparation of a nomination dossier in order to include the historical center of Shusha in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List., the Culture Ministry told APA.

The inclusion of the Shusha Historical and Architectural Reserve, created in 1977 at the initiative of the great leader Heydar Aliyev, in the preliminary list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2001 is one of the important steps in this direction.

From the monuments included in Shusha Historic and Architectural Reserve, the Upper and Lower Govharaga mosques, Khan gizi Natevan’s hose, Garabag khan palace, Vagif mauzoleum, Mirza Salah bey Zohrabbeyov’s residential house, Shusha kurgan, Shusha cave camp, Shusha fortress, and others may be noted.

In Shusha city, a total of 549 ancient buildings, a total length of 1203 meters streets laid with stone, 17 quarter springs, 17 mosques, 6 caravanserais, 3 mausoleums, 2 medrese, 2 castles, and fortress walls existed.

As well as, 72 important art and historic monuments, houses of state figures, and other renowned persons existed. Currently, works are implemented for the study of the condition of the mentioned history and architecture monuments by the ministry.

Note that the World cultural heritage list is created on the basis of the 1972 UNESCO convention about World cultural and natural heritage protection. The aforementioned convention determines the type of natural or cultural places for inclusion in the World Heritage List and exclusive universal value monuments and places are considered worthy to be announced as global heritage. From Azerbaijan into this list Shirvanshahlar palace and Maiden tower together Icheri Sheher, Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape and Khan sarayi together with Sheki historic center were included.
