“We should keep Shaki as an apple of our eyes. We should maintain the architecture and traditions of the city. Shaki does not belong to only the Shaki population, it is a pearl of mankind. Shaki’s including into the List of World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO is proud for Azerbaijan,” told Abulfas Garayev, the Minister of Culture in press conference dedicated finals of the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO, held in Baku, APA reports.

According to him, this issue will go down into the Azerbaijani nation’s history as an extraordinary case.

The minister stated that 1121 sites had already been included in the List of World Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO: “Three of these sites belong to Azerbaijan. 13 places of Azerbaijan are included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Heritage. We will continue this process.”

Mr. Garayev also emphasized that new advice had been given in the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee: “Sites will not be directly nominated for the World Heritage Committee. They will primarily be presented to Commission, and the Commission will determine criteria. This proposal will be approved in the General Assembly in November. UNESCO specialists have visited Nakhchivan and Lankaran in recent 10 days and met several places. These places will be presented as claimants to the World Heritage Committee in the future.”

A. Garayev added more than 2300 representatives came to Baku to participate in the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee.

“Hosting such event is proud for Azerbaijan,” the minister stressed.
