17 years have passed since the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev passed away, APA reports.

The memory of the national leader is revered in Azerbaijan, as well as abroad.

Note that Heydar Alirza Aliyev was born on May 10th, 1923, in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan city. After he graduated from Nakhchivan Pedagogical College in 1939, he studied at the Architecture Faculty of Azerbaijan Industry Institute (currently Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University). The war did not let him complete his education. Since 1941, Heydar Aliyev was the head of the department at the People’s Internal Affairs Commissariat of Nakhchivan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1944, he was sent to serve at state security bodies.

Since 1964, Heydar Aliyev worked as the deputy chairman of the State Security Committee under the Council of Ministers of Azerbaijan SSR; in 1967, he was the chairman of the Committee; he was promoted to the rank of general-mayor. During those years, he graduated from the Faculty of History of Azerbaijan State University.

At the plenum of the Central Committee of the Azerbaijani Communist Party in July, 1969, Heydar Aliyev was elected the first secretary of the Azerbaijani Communist Party Central Committee and became the head of the country.

In December of 1982, Heydar Aliyev was elected a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Soviet Union Communist Party and appointed the first deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and became one of the leaders of the USSR. Throughout 20 years, Heydar Aliyev was a deputy of the USSR Supreme Council and for 5 years, the deputy chairman of the USSR Supreme Council.

In October of 1987, Heydar Aliyev resigned from his positions as a sign of protest against the political course pursued by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Soviet Union Communist Party and personally by Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev.

Heydar Aliyev released a statement at the Azerbaijani representation in Moscow the next day after the Soviet troops had committed the bloody tragedy in Baku on January 20th, 1990, and he demanded the organizers and executors of the crime to be punished.

In July of 1991, he left the Soviet Union Communist Party as a sign of protest against the hypocritical policy of the USSR leadership towards the controversial situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. Heydar Aliyev came back to Azerbaijan in July of 1990 and lived first in Baku and then, in Nakhchivan. In the same year, he was elected a deputy of the Azerbaijani Supreme Council. In 1991-1993, he was the chairman of the Supreme Council of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the deputy chairman of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan Republic.

He was elected the chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party at the founding congress of the party in Nakhchivan city in 1992.

When there was a risk of losing independence and civil war in May-June of 1993, the Azerbaijani people demanded to bring Heydar Aliyev to power. The then heads of Azerbaijan had to invite Heydar Aliyev to Baku. On June 15th of 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected the chairman of the Azerbaijani Supreme Council, and on June 24th, he started exercising the powers of the President of Azerbaijan Republic by the decision of Milli Majlis. On October 3rd of 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected the President of Azerbaijan as a result of the nationwide voting.

On October 11th, 1998, he was again elected the President of Azerbaijan Republic by winning 76.1% of votes in the elections.

Despite the fact that he was nominated at the presidential elections of October 15th, 2003, he dropped out of the presidential race due to his health conditions in favor of Ilham Aliyev. On December 12th of the same year, national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev passed away in Cleveland Hospital in the U.S.

He was buried in the Alley of Honors.
