Pakistan: 4 killed when boat capsize in Indus river

At least four people including children were killed and 13 other missing when a passenger boat capsized in Indus River near Haripur district in northwestern Pakistan, official said Wednesday, ONA reports quoting Anadolu Agency.

The boat was carrying around 35 passengers from Shangla district to Haripur when it was plunged in Indus River at Burg area of Haripur around nine kilometer upstream of Taebela Dam.

"So far four dead bodies including two women and two children have been recovered while 13 passengers are still missing," Bilal Ahmad Faizi, spokesman for Rescue 1122, told Anadolu Agency.

Three of the passengers managed to swim ashore without assistance.

Fifteen passengers have been rescued alive during the rescue operation, he added.

Authorities fear a further rise in the death toll as search and rescue efforts involving Pakistan army are still underway.

According to army spokesman, the Pakistan army has also sent their deep sea divers to take part in rescue operation after the civil administration asked for the army assistance.

"Army has sent 24 SSG deep sea divers and rescued 11 individuals while search operation in progress for remaining persons," army spokesman said in a statement.
