The issue of Fizuli Tanirverdiyev, head of the Lachin district executive authority’s department of law, having shared pictures in support of the independence referendum held in Iraqi Kurdistan, is under investigation, law enforcement authorities told APA.

Legal measures will be taken in case the department head is found guilty of an offence, said law-enforcement authorities.

Tanirverdiyev has written on his Facebook page that he supports the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan and even shared photos of Northern Iraq Kurdish Autonomy leader Massoud Barzani.

“There is a freedom of speech in Azerbaijan, everybody speaks what he wants. And I said what I thought was right. What I have said is not a manifestation of separatism, but freedom of speech,” Tanirverdiyev himself told APA.

Asked by an APA correspondent to comment on his stance that contradicts Azerbaijan’s national and state interests, Tanirverdiyev threatened to sue the agency.

“I’m an official. Are you an official state body so I explain something to you? When the authorities summon me, I will answer. Are you the State Security Service of the Interior Ministry? If they tell me to make a statement, you will see that I will do it without fear of anyone. If you see me as a separatist, then sue me. I do not see this as a manifestation of separatism,” he said.
