Each candidate should convey their thoughts to the public through media, Ali Hasanov, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan for Public and Political Affairs, said at a seminar-conference on the role and duties of media in the upcoming presidential election.

In consideration of the candidates’ request, television will determine the duration of live debates for candidates between 21.00 and 23.00 Baku time, Hasanov said. “In the past, debates used to take place at 19.00 and as a result some people were unable to watch the debates,” he added.

The presidential assistant noted that the media’s role is comparable to the role of candidates.

“The media should determine a fixed price, as well as a time and a location for candidates. The media should create equal conditions for all candidates. This is based on media professionalism and the requirements of the Election Code. The media should be careful not to violate the requirements of the Election Code. Media monitoring will be carried out from 3-4 centers; all election observation missions will mention in their reports the conditions created in the media for candidates," he added.

Hasanov recalled that one of the candidates is the current president.

“The media should not cross the line between the coverage of the president’s current activities and the promotion of the president’s candidacy. I believe that the media will cope with this issue professionally. On the other hand, the requirements of the Election Code on paid air time should not be violated. The price set for one candidate should be the same for the other one,” the presidential assistant said.
