During the plenary meeting on Tuesday, Azerbaijan’s parliament approved the report on annual municipal activities, APA reported.

During the discussion, MPs voiced their proposals and remarks.

In her speech, MP Ganira Pashayeva accused municipality chairmen of being unaware of their duties.

MP Fazail Ibrahimli put much of the blame on the administrative body in charge of controlling municipalities. “How come an electoral body is controlled administratively? If so, we should also appoint an administrative body to control the parliament,” he said.

He suggested that municipalities should rather be controlled by the Ministry of Justice, adding that the term “administrative” does not go with electoral bodies in any way.

First Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov objected to Fazail Ibrahimli, saying administrative control is necessary as it is mentioned in the Constitution as well. He added that the ministry should rather try to raise awareness among municipality members.

Deputy Minister of Justice Vilayat Zahirov said the proposals and remarks will be considered next year.

The report was put to the vote and approved.
