Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said Friday that he believes Azerbaijan would be one of the world’s most developed countries if it had been able to maintain its independence.

“However, foreign interference caused the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic to collapse. Regrettably, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic did not last long. After two years, we were deprived of our independence,” said President Aliyev addressing an official reception held on the occasion of the national holiday of Azerbaijan, Republic Day, APA reported.

He noted that the first democratic republic in the Muslim world was established 99 years ago.

“The Azerbaijani people are rightfully proud that it’s our nation that established this republic. This is a historic event for our nation and the world. The people of Azerbaijan gained independence. The first democratic republic in the Muslim world was established in Azerbaijan. This showed how progressive and talented our people are,” President Aliyev added.
