President Aliyev: Azerbaijani people can rightly be proud of establishment of first democratic republic in Muslim East
- 28 May 2018
The people of Azerbaijan can rightly be proud of the establishment of the first democratic republic in the Muslim East, said President Ilham Aliyev.
He made the remarks at an official reception on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) in Baku on May 28, APA reports.
The head of state said the establishment of the first democratic republic in the Muslim East once again shows that the Azerbaijani people are great, freedom-loving and progressive.
President Aliyev noted that the Azerbaijani state respects the memory of the founders of the ADR and perpetuates their names.
“A monument was erected in the honor of the ADR in Baku several years ago. The year 2018 was declared a year of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in the country. During 23 months of its activity, the ADR did a great work. The state flag, Azerbaijani citizenship, the National Army were established, more than 200 laws were adopted, women were given the right to vote, and the Baku State University was created,” he said.
The president went on saying that the collapse of the ADR is a great tragedy. He expressed confidence that if the ADR did not collapse, Azerbaijan would be one of the world’s richest countries now.
“This once again shows that preserving independence is more difficult gaining it. The erection of the national flag by national leader Heydar Aliyev in Nakhchivan in 1990 was a historic event,” President Aliyev added.
